How Reiki Healing Works: Energy Medicine Explained

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive healing technique that channels universal life force energy through the hands of a trained practitioner. The word “Reiki” comes from the Japanese words “Rei” (universal) and “Ki” (life energy). Developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 20th century, Reiki works on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels by supporting the body’s natural ability to heal.

The Philosophy Behind Reiki

Reiki is based on the understanding that life force energy flows through all living beings. When this energy is low or blocked, we’re more likely to feel unwell or stressed. When it’s high and flowing freely, we feel balanced, vibrant, and well.

This life force energy connects everything. In Reiki, the practitioner acts as a conduit for this energy, helping to release blockages and restore harmony within the recipient.

What Happens During a Reiki Session?

A Reiki session typically lasts between 45 and 90 minutes. It is conducted in a calm, quiet space with the recipient lying down, fully clothed. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above various parts of the body, following a sequence or working intuitively.

Common experiences during a session include:

  • Deep relaxation

  • Sensations of heat, tingling, or pulsing

  • Emotional release

  • Vivid imagery or colors

  • A meditative or dreamlike state

Each person’s experience is unique, and no two sessions are ever the same. Reiki is safe and complementary to all other forms of medical or therapeutic treatments.

Scientific Perspective and Research

While Reiki is often classified as energy medicine, its mechanisms are still not fully understood by modern science. However, research increasingly supports its benefits for stress reduction, pain relief, and emotional well-being.

Studies have shown that Reiki may:

  • Lower heart rate and blood pressure

  • Reduce anxiety and depression

  • Improve sleep

  • Enhance overall quality of life in patients with chronic illness

Hospitals and clinics around the world are integrating Reiki into patient care, particularly in oncology, palliative care, and mental health settings.

The Benefits of Reiki

Reiki’s effects can be subtle or profound, depending on the individual and their circumstances. Benefits may include:

  • Stress Reduction: Reiki encourages the body to move into a parasympathetic (rest and digest) state.

  • Pain Management: Many recipients report reduced physical discomfort after sessions.

  • Emotional Healing: Reiki helps process suppressed feelings, grief, and trauma.

  • Enhanced Clarity: It can help quiet the mind and support decision-making.

  • Spiritual Connection: Reiki often deepens a person’s sense of connection to self, others, or a higher consciousness.

Reiki Principles and Self-Healing

At the heart of Reiki are five guiding principles, which promote a mindful and compassionate way of living:

  1. Just for today, I will not worry.

  2. Just for today, I will not be angry.

  3. Just for today, I will do my work honestly.

  4. Just for today, I will be grateful.

  5. Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

These principles serve as a daily reminder to cultivate inner peace and awareness. Many Reiki practitioners also use self-treatment to stay centered and balanced.

Becoming a Reiki Practitioner

Anyone can learn Reiki. Training is typically structured in three levels:

  • Reiki Level 1: Focuses on self-healing and practicing on others through physical touch.

  • Reiki Level 2: Introduces symbols for distance healing and emotional work.

  • Reiki Master (Level 3): Allows one to teach and attune others, deepening the spiritual path.

Each level involves an attunement—a spiritual initiation that connects the student more deeply with Reiki energy.

Reiki and Modern Wellness

In the current age of overwhelm and information overload, Reiki offers a reset button. It provides a gentle space to come home to oneself—to remember stillness, to release, to receive.

Reiki is particularly beneficial when combined with other holistic practices like Ayurveda, yoga, meditation, and sound healing. It complements, rather than replaces, medical care and can be used as a tool for personal growth and healing.

Conclusion

Reiki is not just a therapy; it’s a way of life. It invites you to soften, to trust, and to tap into an unseen source of support that’s always available. Whether you're navigating a health challenge, experiencing emotional overwhelm, or simply seeking more balance, Reiki offers a loving, accessible path toward wholeness.

As the world turns more toward energy-based and holistic practices, Reiki stands out as a profound yet simple method of aligning body, mind, and spirit.

Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing and wellbeing. During a Reiki session you receive Reiki or "life force energy” which flows through us and lives within all of us. Because we are all connected and as one this treatment can be given either in-person or remotely. The principle idea behind Reiki is that if a person's ‘life force energy’ or ‘Prana’ ( Ayurveda) or Qi ( Traditional Chinese Medicine) is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stressed, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Reiki helps to address this delicate balance.

The word Reiki is a combination of two Japanese words - Rei which means “Universal Wisdom or Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is a spiritually guided life force energy.

I had to let you know that I have never experienced such great and emotional energy flow through me as I did yesterday. It was a mixture of feelings and the deep emotions blocked within which surfaced felt so intense.

Even yesterday during the day, randomly emotions were just surfacing and had to let it out a couple of times.
Thank you so much and I am glad I took the plunge and booked in my first reiki session with you!

  • We will usually begin with a short chat, just to see and understand anything that miht be going on in life for you at the moment. You would then be invited to lay down on the treatment bed. You remain fully clothed, but I would usually ask you to remove your shoes. After getting comFORTABLE under a soft blanket I will guide you into a gentle meditation with soothing music. Once you are relaxEd the treatment will begin, using either hands on method ( placing hands gently on certain energy points in the body) or hands off ( where the hands simply hover over the energy centres instead). Both methods are equally effective and up to your own personal preference. At the end of the session there is time to ask any questions or receive any feedback on what might have come up for you.

  • Before the session I would ask you to provide a simple snap shot of your face. This helps to strengthen the. connection. We would connect via Zoom and this again gives you the opportunity to let me now anything that might be going on for you at the moment. We then turn off the cameras while I start the music and you lay back and relax in your own space. At the end of the session you will hear a gentle chime to let you know we have finished. I remain online for a short time in case you wish to discuss anything.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use with no known contraindications and can be used alongside  all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery and healing.

Receiving Reiki can feel different to everyone. For some it can feel like a glowing radiance moving through you, others may feel a tightening and then releasing of emotions, others may feel very little is ‘happening’ at all. Simply trust in the process and know that Reiki is flowing and ‘working’ just as it should. Reiki treats the whole person;  mind, body and soul, creating many wonderful effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing, improving sleep, reducing anxiety and stress and bringing clarity when life might feel stuck. You can receive Reiki either in-person with me at my clinic space in Reigate, Surrey or as a distance treatment.

I had my first ever reiki session with Claire and wasn’t sure of what to expect of Reiki itself. I arrived feeling stressed because of things going on in my life and Claire instantly made me feel relaxed. As soon as the reiki began, I was instantly aware of a very positive energy, and bodily sensations arose off the back of this. Claire was able to identify a few things from the session that were aligned with me.

I left the session feeling relaxed, happy and lighter and told everyone I knew how great she was. I would highly recommend.” R.M

DISTANCE REIKI

If you are wondering how Distance Reiki works ( appointments take place over ZOOM) and what the experience might feel like, you might find it helpful to read the below article from the Editor of Natural Health Magazine, who had a distance Reiki healing with me.
